Sessions that fit your gear

Home training, park bar, hotel gym, backyard rings — the reality of a calisthenics practice is that equipment changes with location. v1.41 introduced Equipment Mode. v1.41.1 makes it something you can actually find, flip, and trust.

Your Gear — a real setting, not a hidden toggle

Open Home. There's a new chip near the top labelled either "All equipment" or "Bar + Bands" or whatever your current setup looks like. Tap it and you land on the dedicated Your Gear page.

Two ways to configure:

  • "I have all equipment" — hero toggle at the top. Flip this on and every session runs unclamped. No downgrades, no substitutions, no gating. This is the default for a fresh install because most users pick their own path from day 1.
  • Custom setup — five toggles: pull-up bar, rings, resistance bands, weighted (dip belt or vest), parallettes. Turn on only what you actually own. Every rung-based session (Foundations, planche, front lever, handstand, and the other eight skill families) now renders content you can actually train.

The chip is always visible on Home. Bar → park → gym → travel — one tap between them. The point of Equipment Mode was never "set it once and forget" — it's "your reality changes, and the app should keep up."

Truthful defaults, honest downgrades

If you tell the app you don't have rings, and today's planche session was going to prescribe a Ring Support Hold, we don't hide the exercise or lie about your rung. We show you the highest rung on that ladder that you CAN train right now, with a small pill: "Step 8 available once you add rings."

Your underlying rung state doesn't change. The moment you flip rings back on, next session resolves at your true rung again. No recalibration, no penalty.

Standard (non-rung) programs get an honest warning banner at the start of the workout: "This session includes 2 exercises that need equipment you don't have." No auto-substitution yet — that requires an authored replacement table we're building next.

"Everything" is one tap

The most important thing we got right this release: switching between "I have everything" and "custom" is a single toggle. Home chip → tap → flip → done. Because the reality of a park visit vs a home evening vs a hotel gym is different equipment access, and asking users to reconfigure five toggles every time defeats the whole point.

Fresh onboarding step

New users see a "Your home setup" screen after picking a skill focus. Five presets ordered by what's actually most common — Bodyweight only first (wall + floor is the honest baseline for most home trainers), then Just a bar, then Bar + bands, then I have everything, then a custom picker. Pick one, tap Continue, move on. Skippable — the default is unclamped everything, and you can always tune from Home later.

What we deliberately didn't do

  • Muscle-transfer substitution. When a rung is gated, we show you what you can do — we don't yet swap a Ring Support Hold for a Floor Support Hold. That's a content problem before it's a code problem. Waiting for real usage data on which axes users toggle off most before we author the substitution table.
  • Affiliate links to buy gear. Every axis carries an intent-measurement CTA that ships as a "prepared but inactive" placeholder. If demand shows up in the taps, we activate real links.

Under the hood

Equipment mode ships as a two-part contract. Backend clamps rung-based content to the highest rung your equipment satisfies. iOS renders the clamped session with a tiny upsell pill on downgraded exercises. Toggling gear takes effect on your next session — no re-download, no re-calibration.

If you were on v1.41.0, the Your Gear settings were buried in Profile with defaults that didn't match reality. This patch moves the surface to Home, flips the defaults to match "most people have a bar, some have bands, everything else is opt-in," and fixes the toggle discovery so it doesn't take a support email to find.

Coming soon

  • Muscle-transfer substitution — replace the gated exercise with an authored alternative you CAN train, not just a warning.
  • Session-specific equipment memory — remember that Wednesdays you train at the park (bar only) and Saturdays at the gym (everything). Reduces the toggling.
  • Real affiliate links — activated per-axis once we see the intent-tap volume justify the setup work.

Available in v1.41.1 on TestFlight now. Rolling out to the App Store this week. Feedback welcome at support@zenmotion.app.
